Joy is an inspiring and talented teacher. She makes whirling around the pole look like a walk in the park. She does it so effortlessly that you begin to think you can do it yourself too. NOT. It takes tons of skill and countless burns and bruises, to achieve her level of ability. And although, I would never even dream of reaching that point at all, her encouragement and her support makes me want to keep going.

Learning from Joy is an extraordinary experience. The lessons are challenging for someone who has no dance background, but they’re also extremely fun. You walk away feeling more confident about yourself even if you muck up the routine. I was fortunate enough to be able to come to Singapore on my way home to Australia from a long international adventure. After almost 9 moths of experiencing different cultures, doing shows and of course, teaching pole dance, Singapore was a great stop over to re adjust to the time differences and squeeze in one more stop.

I am so glad the timing turned out well, as I had a fabulous time! My trip was short (about 4 days) but oh so sweet. I met some lovely ladies that had so much passion for their art, and truly enjoyed what they were doing.
I found that by travelling to each country, I experienced such a huge culture difference, which in turn affected the pole industry so much. Singapore was no exception.

Just as I thought, it was much about glitz and glamour. The studios I visited had such a fun, girly environment; Glitter, girly colours, the newest music and sparkly outfits. Of course the elements of fitness and sport were there, but it was more a secondary result of the fun classes that were being taught.

The ladies were taught to walk tall, feel good about themselves and how to present themselves well through movement. Given such supportive, non-pretentious environment, it was easy to see that the women flourished and really enjoyed themselves at their classes.

As I taught some workshops, I found the ladies were keen to learn new moves, correct old habits and acquire some inspiration, however I also found that they had knowledge and support to share themselves. There was not one moment where a student needed some guidance that another class member didn’t rush to their side to help however they could. The ladies encouraged each other, supported each other and really gave each person the respect and attention they deserved. It was so wonderful to see that there was no competitive edge to these motives, which I have found to become an increasingly rare occurrence. Also I found the ladies in Singapore to be some of the most polite and respectful students I have ever taught, which shows me not just a glimpse into the culture, but also the respect they have for one another and the industry.

It was so uplifting to visit the pole dancers of Singapore. I do hope that their pole community stays strong and true to their intent, as it will only strengthen their presence in the world of pole and encourage more women to take up such a wonderful art form.

So to the pole dancers of Singapore:
Thank you for having me teach and perform for you, I enjoyed my time with you all so much and I hope to come back and visit again soon.
Stay true to what you believe in, work hard and you will keep showing the rest of the world what bright, loving and talented pole dancers you all are.

Itching for a dance and wanting to keep a girlfriend company, we headed out to Clarke Quay, a prominent nightspot area in Singapore. She suggested visiting a joint to check out the music and I followed along. We had a great time grooving to the tunes churned out by the band and the various singers. When the DJ took over, I felt the pole beckoning me to come and have some fun with it. I obeyed its command.

In high spirits, I climbed up the podium and started dancing with the pole and did some swings. I was having a ball fooling around when all of a sudden, a girl in her early twenties came up the podium. Without a word, she shoved me aside, did a basic invert and left. I was like WTF! Excuse me, your point being? It was totally bewildering and my girlfriend looked horrified. What happened to good old fashion manners? It was totally uncalled for and I was upset because it was a blatant message of- You loser, let me show you how it is done. I didn’t know a pole dancing competition is in progress?!?

Although I did not react, I was quite shakened by the whole episode. Thinking of the incident now still makes my blood turn cold. Shocked by the degree of rudeness we pole dancers are capable of. What makes you think that I am not able to do what you did? And even if I could not do it, does that mean that I cannot have my fun doing my version of pole dancing in a club? Does being pole dancers makes us superior beings? Hell! NO!

Truth be told, this startling phenomenon is not so shocking to me. I have noticed it coming for a long time and I am really heartbroken. Clearly, the monster is ready to devour and conquer. Sometimes I get the impression from certain individuals in the pole dancing community that pole dancing makes us elitist. No doubt we all have great pride in our wonderful art but does that mean that we need to step on others, treat others brusquely, intrude on others space to prove our superiority with the pole? Please do not do that, it makes me feel very ashamed of my own people.

Whether you are practitioner of the pole for its sensuality or its acrobatic elements,  let us all keep it professional and in loving spirit. Being talented comes with responsibility. The responsibility to love our art and make sure that we behave in appropriate manners that will make others respect us and our art. I truly fear the day will come when pole dancing will not be associated with sleaze. Shocking statement but true. Rather, others will go, “Pole dancers? Oh! Those obnoxious and rude bitches!” I used to detest so much the fact that pole dancing has so much sleaze connotations. It is so ironic that now, I realized, there is a bigger and uglier monster out there, waiting to get in.

I love pole dancing and I love all of you who share this great passion of mine. It is magical and it is one of the most wonderful things I have and will ever encounter in my life. I feel very privileged to be a part of this community and I hope that we will grow to greater heights in our skills and in our hearts. Pole dancing does NOT make us superior beings.

Let’s not make giant leaps in our acrobatic abilities and regress in our humanity.

What’s my take on it?

Hmmm…. Seriously? That’s a toughie to answer. I would like to get all possessive about my pole and insist that this is a strictly women’ arena. This is feminine territory, back off all you testosterone inflated creatures! Unfortunately this is not true and the males will be here to stay.

More and more males are becoming interested and intrigued in the art as much as women. Some of the motivations might be similar but generally I believe male and female pole practitioners view the pole very differently. For men, fitness and the mental and physical challenge pretty much sums up their equation. For women, or at least I would like to imagine the majority of us are also attracted to the sensuality that a woman can bring to the pole on top of the fitness aspect. I for one, am very much drawn to that.

When I perform, I feel very safe with the pole, there is something assuring about gripping the steel hard pole. I feel like I have a companion and I am not afraid. And I feel very sexed up too. The moment I grasp it in my hands, the ripples of sensuality will just seep into my entire body as if a dam have broke and all hell breaks loose. I just want to close my eyes and get in touch with the siren within that threatens to consume my entire being. It is a god-damn sexy feeling!

I am not a hard core gymnastic poler because I am also a strong advocator for the sensuality that a woman can demonstrate with the pole. And that is the way I would like SensUal Joy to remain, faithful in our mantra 70% sensuality and 30% tricks and stunts.

Whatever your motivation for the pole may be, whether it is to demonstrate your impressive pole stunts or to illustrate the siren within you, use it to further your sense of self and use it to brighten the world a little with your happy, satisfied and hopefully sensualicious smile on the pole.

Pole Dancing Fellowship in Asia

The growth of pole dancing in Asia has been phenomenal to say the least. It has exploded into even what used to be deemed as countries with conservative cultures. Pole dancing studios are sprouting up everywhere and many exercise studios are scrambling to include it as part of their service offerings as well.

And of course, little Singapore has also brought it out of the shady nightclubs into the National Day Parade. This is a happy development for all polers in Asia. Together with the power of technology, many have found beautiful friendships and bonded over the lamentations of bruises and stereotypical mindsets they have to fend off especially with Asian culture as it is.

We have also seen Pole Dancing Congress and high quality pole competitions taking place all over in Asia like never before. In fact, it has even seeped its way into the cultural scenes in Singapore with its recent appearance in geitai (shows put up by the Chinese during Hungry Ghost Festival to entertain and appease the spirits that roam the earth during this period) performances. Unbelievable but true.

I of course, had the privilege too to make friends with some of my Asian counterparts. Studio owners and pole students alike. One of them would be Viva Vertical in Malaysia. Brave girls who started their studio in a conservative Muslim country. We need more courageous women like that to make a stand.

The POLE POSITION Pole Dance competition, held on the stage of Super Import Nights aims to offer pole dancers and pole dance fitness practitioners a chance to demonstrate this beautiful dance form on center stage of Asia’s Leading Automotive Show.

With Pole dancing becoming main stream here in Singapore and Asia, there are a lot of amazing dancers and performers out there worthy of entering a pole dance competition. This gives the pole practitioners, amateurs, dancers a chance to show off there skills and win some prizes and to show how much they have achieved from the wonderful sport / dance.

The Super Import Nights, an annual event, this time 3^rd year running has seen an annual turn out of above 70k, and first time featuring a pole dance competition

• 18^th Sept (Friday) to 20^th Sept (Sunday) Heats

• 21^st Sept (Monday-Public Holiday) Finals-6 will be chosen for the finals

CONTEST RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. All participants should make themselves available on any of the heats date assigned and should contestant successfully qualify for the finals, the participant must ensure that she is available on final date, else will be disqualified. Exact time of the competition will be announced soonest upon program being finalized by main organizer Three Angles Production.

1. Assignment of heats date and order of appearance will be will be decided by the organizers. But order of appearance of the 6 finalists will be based on drawing lots.

1. In the event there’s overwhelming response, organizers may request contestants to pre-submit or have another pre-selection round. Or the organizers may reduce or increase the number of contestants for heats and finals based on overall number of participants.

1. A non-refundable* registration fee $25 per contestant should be submitted in person or by mail (cheque crossed and payable to Acro Productions Blk 261 Waterloo Street #02-29 Waterloo Centre Singapore 180261) 1 week before the pole competition11 Sept 2009.

1. Contestants participate at their own will and risk and will not hold the organizers, venue, judges, and all associates liable for any injuries sustained.

1. Judges and organizers decisions are final and no arbitration on results

1. This competition is opened to ladies above 18 years of age and pole students of any of the pole dance schools. Pole dance instructors are not eligible to take part and those without experience with pole handling or suffer back, joint or ports injuries of any kind participate at their own risk.

1. This is a solo category competition as such only one person should be performing at each time. Each contestant has to prepare a routine of approximately 3 to 4min. When a contestant qualifies for the finals, she can repeat the same routine or prepare another new routine. The contestant is responsible to bring along a copy of the music she has selected, original preferred but should the contestant bring a self-edited version, then please ensure it is copied in a format that can be played by normal CD player and not lap top.

1. 2 x-stages will be set on stage, one static and one spinny. Contestant can use both or either one but people who use the spinny pole MUST know how to handle a spinny. There will be no discrimination on NOT knowing how to use either, judging will completely be based on the overall presentation including choice of music, costumes, pole handling (i.e. all dance must involve a pole element) and not particularly favoured towards pole tricks or using more of a particular pole etc.

1. Poles will be wiped down before every contestant with alcohol wipes. The only grip aid allowed for this competition are those in power form. Gloves and cream based grip aid are strictly prohibited and will constitute heavy penalty as such aid may impede the next contestant’s performance. Cream-based grip aid forms a layer on the pole hard to be removed in one session.

1. X-stages will be set up at event venue and contestants can come and practice on pole at a cost small fee. Booking is preferred or else it will be based on 1^st some 1^st served. More details will be provided thereafter

1. The organizers of this event reserves the rights to alter the contest rules and regulations without prior announcements. Any contestant who fails to abide by the rules may be penalized in terms of marks or may meet with disqualification.

I am thrilled, together with the rest of the polers all over the world that pole dancing has finally made its much-due appearance in a highly significant setting. You would have to agree with me that a nation’s national day parade has to be one of the best place possible for pole dancing to receive its proper recognition.

And aren’t I so proud that my nation, this little island that is just a modest dot on the world map have stepped it up and decided to celebrate pole dancing for its goodness. And kudos to Acro Polates for all their hard work to make this possible.

If all the pole dancing you have ever been associated with are doughy images you have seen on movies and scantily clad singers in their music videos, you will probably be part of the “what the hell, we just cleaned it up!” team at King Cross. Our most profound respect if the above mentioned is true but you still find pole dancing a cool and admirable activity. Pole dancing have been penetrating country after country faster than you can say ‘Oh wow’ during the last few years.

Countless women are embracing it and even more are getting better at their pole moves/tricks with their OWN poles even as I speak. And yet, we are still confronted by individuals and groups belonging to the dinosaur age, refusing to embrace what have been a healthy does of self esteem to women all over the world, insisting that it is just sleaze, only sleaze and nothing else.

This is a terrible shame. It is just like people who insists that yoga are for weirdos and only for people who have nothing better to do than to bend themselves into odd shapes and positions. Never mind that history has proven its enormous benefits.

They shut their eyes, cover their ears, shake their heads, run away shrieking that it is bad, bad and bad.

Nothing else matters.

*plenty of eye rolling*

Oh well, suit yourself. I think it’s hard to climb or swing the pole anyway if you are a dinosaur.

Pole Burn - Marks of a Champion

Sometimes I get remarks like,” OMG, my friend went to learn pole dancing and came back with all these awful bruises on her leg. It’s horrible!”

My response? “Your friend bears the marks of a champion.”

Try that! LOL!

When I first started on pole dancing I had the same reaction when I saw the results of my battle with the pole. I hated it. It was such a dismal sight. It was unsightly and unbecoming of a woman! It was only much later that it dawned on me that I was being very silly.

I was ashamed of the visible marks that display the positive qualities I have as a person. My dedication, my discipline, my patience and my kick-ass attitude. Woohoo!!!

Since then, I have learnt to celebrate my battle wounds. Of course, I don’t mean that you start whacking the pole senseless and to ignore the feedback from your body. Your body is a temple of God. Love it and it will reward you and aid in the achievement of your goals.

So there, take good care of those wounds.

Be proud of them and keep on pole-ing on!
